Mountains revisited: theory in field practice

Reflection on the Gallery Visit

When we entered the gallery I obviously saw the huge hyper-realistic painting (Smrkový prales by Adam Kašpar, 2022) as one of the first works of art there and I really liked it. The size and colors were important factors I think, but the smell was the thing that lured me to it the most. I don’t know if you noticed the smell, but the painting was quite fresh, painted this year, and you could still smell the oil paints if you came close enough. However Two Representations by Daniel Fisher (1981) was the artwork that spoke to me the most. It was the one with a photo of a landscape and a map that was like infused with it. (I tried to find it online so that I could post it along with this, but I didn’t succeed.) Maybe I picked it mainly because it relates to my research, I don’t really know… But in my research I want to work with maps in some way as well, I want to compare the map of the place where we’ll be staying and some of the maps from Wow and perhaps merge them to some extent. To answer the question whether it inspires me; yes it does. Although I think I had a faint idea of how I would do my research before that and I picked this artwork because it somehow corresponded with my ideas. I liked how simple it was. It was “only” the photo and the map, but that makes it perfect for non-representational theory that I want to work with.
