Mountains revisited: theory in field practice

Ambarino Mountains (Red Dead Journey, PART I)

Hi. Since I wanna make my research topic about a video game, I decided to stick to it since the beginning. So, I won’t talk about my relationship to the, let’s say “real mountains”, but to those from the video game I chose.

The Red Dead series is something that’s much more than a game to me. I started to play it ever since it came out and it’s something like my second world… or to say it better, it’s the world where I like to escape from the real one. That means that I know a lot about it, I experienced a lot of things during that time and it’s also somehow real for me too. Dunno how to express it.

So, emotions, experiences, and knowledge… Well, it’s kinda difficult to write it shortly, but I’ll try. The mountains are a special location for me. I will write about the state of Ambarino. In the game, there’s an interesting aura when you wander there. During the day it’s fine. The temperature is somewhere around five degrees and if it’s sunny, it’s a really cool place. (I will try to put some pictures here). During the night… oh boy, you don’t wanna be there. Lots of dangerous animals, freezing cold… sometimes you can meet some weirdos and creepy places.

One night, when I was looking for some deers to hunt to feed people in my camp, I found a cabin. Since it was really, really cold, I went there to see what was up and maybe to spent a night there, since it looked abandoned and there were no lights or anything. I picked my lantern and went in. I was looking around and I found a dead woman lying on the ground. A skeleton. I was kinda scared since it was night and I found such a thing. I looked around the cabin and I found a letter which gave me some idea of what happened there.

The letter was from a guy named Garfield and was from 1864… 35 years old (I was there in 1899). He was a Southern soldier fighting on behalf of the Confederacy, while the woman, Martha, was from the North and he was in love with her. My idea was that he died during the war and she was waiting for him until she died too. I really don’t know. It was… It was creepy… and I rather decide to leave the place…

Well, that was one of my experiences from wandering the mountains. Hope you liked it… (and sorry for the length of the text, I did my best to make it short.)

Also, there is an ambient soundtrack that plays during the gameplay. Here’s the one playing in the Ambarino mountains… check it if you want. It gives that place the atmosphere I was talking about…

  1. Good point of departure and engaging writing, I like how the real belnds with the digital here (even the sensation), next time, I’d go for just a bit more formal English and more in-depth exploration of how the mountains are portrayed.
