Mountains revisited: theory in field practice

Researching the Audiovisual Aspects of the Mountains

I’m going to talk about the way I plan to do my research. It is nothing concrete yet, to be honest. I will see during the field trip how it will all work out, but anyways… I want to work with maps, to compare the map of the location of our stay with some map from Wow. I will pick the later based on the first because I want to plan a route which I will walk, and on my way I will be recording sounds, I will draw, take photos… But the point is that I will walk past the same landmarks in Wow and in Jeseníky. I will for example compare the sounds of forest, running water, birds and so on. I would also love to draw animals, but I cannot rely on seeing any, so my main focus will be flora. I will be sketching flowers and grasses and trees at approximately same locations in Wow and in Jeseníky, and I will see how they differ based on their location.

Another thing that I have in mind is exploring the space through art. I’m planning to make just comparative sketches, mostly for the practical reason that it should be more or less quick, compared to elaborate paintings, but we’ll see, I might even end up painting something. I’ll let my emotions lead the way.

I’m basing this on non-representational theory, that’s why I will be using the sounds and arts. I will attempt to communicate the affects through different media than language. As I said, space and geography will be my concern as well. I will see what I can create with all of this.

  1. Great, these will certainly work – providing a different kind of map is always worth it. If you feel that comparing real worl experience to the game exp. is too sloppy, you could always slit that project in two and create an affective / artistic map of the area and then write a standalone piece on the wow. I’ll leave that up to you but I think that could be worth it as well because you seem to have some promising ideas for your artistic research of the landscape.
